“I wanted it to feel like a story but without any particular narrative attached–more like a collection of moments with an emotional charge to them.”

From festival mainstages to behind the scenes as an organizer and promoter, Treee City has been a ubiquitous presence in North Carolina’s electronic music scene for over a decade. His genre-melding productions and clever DJ selections have led to performances at Moogfest, Hopscotch, and Slingshot, as well sharing stages with Sylvan Esso and Steve Aoki.

“I think this project ultimately is about hope and trying to see each day as a gift and your experiences as lessons, and learning to bet on yourself.”

With an emphasis on the communal nature of art, Treee City’s music toes the line between both upbeat techno house and introspective soundscapes for relaxation. As most artists (and non-artists) reading this will know, making a living purely from your creativity is hard.

In a way, Treee City’s music speaks directly to that difficulty through use of affirmation-like vocal samples, sweeping and moody synths and, if understated, track titles like “Every Day”, “Talkin’ Late”, “Open”, and “Running at the Speed of Light”.

“Finishing songs is hard. I wanted to make songs good enough that I had to finish them, so the experience of finishing the album could be more enjoyable, rather than this huge list of things I had to do and stress about… I wanted to just focus on making the music I want to hear, something that I would want to dance to, and sharing it with people.”

Along with his new album, Treee City has been working on community projects in Durham such as #BlendsWithFriends, Party Illegal, Watershed Grants, and more.
